IFSSO seeks to achieve its goals in various ways. On the broader and general level, it runs a secretariat office which takes care of the communication with its member organizations and with a large number of other national and regional social science organizations, and with the main international organizations in the social sciences. IFSSO has particularly close links with UNESCO and cooperates with this organization whenever possible. On the more specific and concrete level, IFSSO performs activities in the following fields: in program of publications, in its exchange program, and in international meetings.

Every second year, IFSSO used to publish the proceedings of its General Conferences in an occasional paper appearing as special issue of the IFSSO Newsletter. Since 1995, such proceedings have been instead published as a book of collected papers, edited by the Officer in charge of the organization of the General Conference. The aim is to disseminate the contents and the results of the Conferences as much as possible.

Every second year, IFSSO organizes a General Conference in connection with the ordinary session of its General Assembly.

The themes of the General Conference are normally either broad topics of concern and relevance to the social sciences, such as “Globalization and Political Culture (2001), “Environmental Protection and Regional Development (2003), “Interdisciplinary Approach to the Cultural and Minorities in the Process of Globalization (2005), and “Comparative Multi-Discipline Approach in Socio-Cultural Studies: Marginalized Group (2007).

As a part of IFSSO program to stimulate and sponsor international workshops and seminars, IFSSO has continuously encouraged to launch more academic research work and papers in particularly social sciences committed by IFSSO member countries and regions.

On 11 – 13 October 2007, under the cooperation with ISSC, IFSSO held a Conference and General Assembly on “Comparative Multi-Discipline Approach in Socio-Cultural Studies: Marginalized Group”. The anticipation on the success of the program was the contribution of new concepts and techniques in performing social science research, shared among the speakers and participants. The outcome was supposed to be activated in both the neighboring areas and the rest of the world. The venue of the Conference was: ALIT BULANGOW, SANUR, BALI, INDONESIA.

On 21 – 23 November 2009, IFSSO will hold a Conference and General Assembly on “Global and International Migration – Realties of Labor Movements and International Marriages”. The venue of the Conference will be in Chiangmai, Thailand.
